To Foreign Lands by Walt Whitman
I heard that you ask'd for something to prove this puzzle, the New World, And to define America, her athletic Democracy; Therefore I send you my poems, that you behold in them what you wanted.

As The Time Draws Nigh by Walt Whitman
As the time draws nigh, glooming, a cloud, A dread beyond, of I know not what, darkens me.
I shall go forth, I shall traverse The States awhile--but I cannot tell whither or how long; Perhaps soon, some day or night while I am singing, my voice will suddenly cease.
O book, O chants! must all then amount to but this? Must we barely arrive at this beginning of us?... And yet it is enough, O soul! O soul! we have positively appear'd--that is enough

Mr. Apollinax by T. S. Eliot
When Mr. Apollinax visited the United States His laughter tinkled among the teacups. I thought of Fragilion, that shy figure among the birch-trees, And of Priapus in the shrubbery Gaping at the lady in the swing. In the palace of Mrs. Phlaccus, at Professor Channing-Cheetah's He laughed like an irresponsible foetus. Otis laughter was submarine and profound Like the old man of the sea's Hidden under coral islands Where worried bodies of drowned men drift down in the green silence, Dropping from fingers of surf. I looked for the head of Mr. Apollinax rolling under a chair Or grinning over a screen With seaweed in its hair. I heard the beat of centaur's hoofs over the hard turf As his dry and passionate talk devoured the afternoon. 'He is a charming man'--'But after all what did he mean?'-- 'His pointed ears ... He must be unbalanced,'-- 'There was something he said that I might have challenged.' Of dowager Mrs. Phlaccus, and Professor and Mrs. Cheetah I remember a slice of lemon, and a bitten macaroon.

To One Shortly To Die by Walt Whitman
From all the rest I single out you, having a message for you: You are to die--Let others tell you what they please, I cannot prevaricate, I am exact and merciless, but I love you--There is no escape for you.
Softly I lay my right hand upon you--you just feel it, I do not argue--I bend my head close, and half envelope it, I sit quietly by--I remain faithful, I am more than nurse, more than parent or neighbor, I absolve you from all except yourself, spiritual, bodily--that is eternal--you yourself will surely escape, The corpse you will leave will be but excrementitious.
The sun bursts through in unlooked-for directions! Strong thoughts fill you, and confidence--you smile! You forget you are sick, as I forget you are sick, You do not see the medicines--you do not mind the weeping friends--I am with you, I exclude others from you--there is nothing to be commiserated, I do not commiserate--I congratulate you.
